Waifro Cavaliere

A native of Italy, Waifro Cavaliere has always been passionate about wines. As a young man he developed a love of, and respect for, this beverage when he first helped his father pick the grapes in the vineyards and then make the wine in their cellar.

Twenty years ago, he was pleased to discover that his particularly attuned palate could discern all the nuances of wines. In 1985 he became a qualified wine judge and, since then, he has been on judging panels of many prestigious international wine competitions, incuding:

-Intervin Canada and U.S.
-VinItaly Verona, Italy
-Concours Mondial de Bruxelles Belgium, Spain, Portugal
-International Wine & Spirits Competition England
-Selection Mondial Competition Montreal, Canada
-Vini Novelli Vicenza, Italy
-Salone del Vino Lecce, Italy
-CIVAT Competition (VinExpo) Bordeaux, France
-Finger Lakes Wine Competition Rochester, N.Y.
-Eastern International Wine Competition Corning, N.Y.
-Catad’or Hyatt Awards Chile
-Catad’or Hyatt Awards Uruguay
-Catad’or Hyatt Awards Argentina
-China Wine & Spirits Competition Beijing, China
-California State Fair Sacramento, California
-Cervim Competition Val D’Aosta
-Vinus Durii Zamora, Spain

Since 1985, Waifro has traveled extensively to many of the world’s wine regions, where he visited wineries and tasted and reported on wines. In South America, he visited Chile, Uruguay and Argentina; the old-world wine producing countries included Italy, France, Germany, Spain and Portugal. As for the ‘new world’ countries, he visited wineries in Australia, New Zealand and, more recently, the newer kids on the block - China and Tunisia.
In 1992, Waifro launched Enoteca Wine & Food Magazine (now Elite Wine, Food & Travel Magazine). As publisher and writer for Elite, he has reported on all the events that he attends. As well, he has consulted with private clients in developing wine lists, and collectors in establishing personal wine cellars. Waifro is a member in good standing with F.I.J.E.V. (International Federation of Wine & Spirits Journalists and Writers)
